Is the planet warming up?

GlobalWarmingdetail.jpg One of the most fashionable cliches during the last years among progressive people and backward politicians is the so called Global Warming. All the meteorological upsets, from the floods to cold spells, from droughts to typhoons or gales, are explained by the same pattern. The planet is warming up and, as a consequence of that, we will loose our harvest and our forests, and humankind will die under a blazing and inclement sun. Is this the future for our blue world?, it is true the global warming prophecy?

Environmentalism as a religion

Gaia.jpg Chesterton said that, unfortunately, when people quit believing in God believes in anything. He was right, and many facts along the last century demonstrate it to us. Slips of the reach and the extension of this commentary the reasons why human beings are, in addition to rationals, religious animals. The fact is that the religious beliefs are part of human nature and, therefore, a humanist task is to understand it.

Normandy

Normandia.jpgJune 6th, 1944 – Normandy
Around three hundred French civilians were murdered yesterday and an undetermined number were injured during the first hours of the American invasion of continental Europe. Most of the French victims were due to artillery shots coming from the American fleet that was trying to hit German fortifications on the coast before thousands of soldiers proceeded to land on several of the beaches. According to sources in the improvised hospital in the town of Saint Mere Eglise, the slaughter was worse than French and Germans anticipated. “We are dropping like flies” said an eye witness who preferred to remain anonymous. “The Americans came in killing like mad men, I never thought I would say this, but life was better with Adolf Hitler.”

The Minister´s Mini-Houses

Housing Minister María Antonia Trujillo, apart from being a disastrous Minister, is amazingly good at pulling useless projects out of her hat. About a year ago, Prime Minister Zapatero put this newly created ministry in the Extremadura Princess’s hands and she proceeded to tie herself in knots, promising Spaniards absurd “habitation solutions”. She said at the time she was using the term because that is what they call housing in the land of Allende. I still don´t know to which Allende she was referring, the awful president preceeding Pinochet´s equally awful dictatorship or the author of “The House of Spirits”. Both are Chilean and, no matter how much I try, I cannot remember a single native from that country saying “Wow, with these habitation solutions in Santiago, it is impossible to move out on your own” instead of “Wow, housing in Santiago is really expensive”.

Court Of Miracles

Everyone knows the European Commission is pretty useless. The commissioners meet once in a while, take some pictures and between one thing and the other spend on pleasure the money us Europeans turn over to them with as much joy as ignorance. Now and again, apart from this well paid leisure the Commission surprises us with something worth reading, for example, its report on European Employment for 2004. Skimming through, its conclusions confirm what we have been repeating here at Libertad Digital on a daily basis. That is, the European economy does not create jobs even when it tries to; the labor market is strangled by regulation; if nothing changes, this drama will not be a thing of the past but a not-too-distant future.
